The small Erutaki village of Rimakak lies at the edge of Lake Nallishoot, and might offer a haven to rest and resupply the caravan. Ulf Gormundr has visited Rimakak in the past, but when the caravan arrives they find Rimakak’s lodges and huts deserted.
Instead they are accosted by giant sized aquatic women (Merrow) who call a creature known as Arnaalak “Mother”. The escaped slave Kuma, charges into battle armed only with his trusty long spear and goes claw-to-claw with Arnaalak. He is dragged into the water, and presumed drowned.
Sandru heroically dives into the freezing waters to rescue Kuma, and comes out of the lake dragging a giant merman, which is wearing Kuma’s clothing. The battle goes badly, and the group are forced to retreat. The plunge into the frozen lake has left Sandru with a lasting cough that saps his strength.
Back at the caravan the group encounter the men of the village. Who explain that their village was cursed by the water-spirit Arnaalak, for a small slight during the harvest celebration. And that the women have been turned into horrible aquatic monsters.
The group launch another attack on Aranaalak. Throughout the battle Kuma resists the urge to change sides and attack his rescuers from slavery. The battle was briefly paused as a large winged shape flew high over the battlefield, its wind gusts causing Traftar-eagle to plunge into the freezing lake. The outcome of the battle is close, with Sandru receiving horrific injuries after taunting Aranaalak into leaving the depths of the lake.
One of Shalelu’s arrows strikes the final critical blow, the kill-shot piercing the eye-socket and brain cavity of Aranaalak.
The fog over Kuma and the village women is lifted and their minds return to their own. However, Koya’s magic is unable to lift the curse and it seems those afflicted are stuck in their cursed forms. The villagers are gratefully and fish-out treasures from the bottom of the lake, which they reward the hero’s with.
