The party are allowed to stay for one night within the Icey walls of Iqalait. However, many villagers are convinced that the presence of outsiders will anger the spirits of the wind, and cause the dragon to once again attack the village. Kumar, however, must spend the night outside the walls.
The hearthmistress Sonavut asks the heros to see if they can deal with the problem of the Dragon. Sandru introduces the hearthmistress to Koya and the two women spend some time in deep discussion in the fortunetellers wagon.
Sandru gives the party members their missions; to investigate Iqlait and avoid trouble with the locals. Sandra plans to speak to the Chief to discuss trade and the road ahead.
Shalelu has the job of finding their accommodation in the village. She approaches the old shaman and asks him to show her where they will be staying. The kindly-old shaman ‘Tunuak’ laughs and offers to show Shalelu to the special accommodation for outsiders. He leads her on a long winding tunnel that leads to the surface of the glacier. Sensing an ambush Shalelu launches an arrow at the Shaman, as he uses his ice magic to collapse the tunnel, leaving Shalelu on the windy and exposed Glacier fighting a weapon of pure magic. Shalelu flees the fight and hides near the Glaicier cliff. There she finds an ice pick and chains and briefly considers climbing down the Glaicier. She decides instead to build a shelter to get out of the freezing winds.
Wondering where Shalelu has gone Sandru sends Traftar to look for her. Traftar turns into a husky and begins to sniff out the elfs trial. Trafar is accosted by locals who think that he is a sled-dog who has escaped the kennels. Trafar then turns into a bear and scares away the locals.
Meanwhile, Tunuak has returned to the village. Sandru approaches him and seeks to win him over the hero’s cause. Tunuak’s merry laugher turns out to be a power-mad cackle, as Sandru realizes that the Shaman is drunk with power. He asks Sandru to provide him with a caravan load of victims to be sacrificed to the wind-spirits.
Sandru and Traftar-Bear follow the Shalelu’s trail through the ice passage. They discover the arrow and blood on the ice where Shalelu and Tunuak fought. In bear-form Trafar is able to dig out the ice to reach Shalelu on the surface.
Tunuak launches another ambush. While his magic is powerful, the old man is physically to weak to fight the group of heros. He retreats to a secret passage hidden in the tunnel wall. The hero’s follow but they are forced to flee Tunuak’s minon, a powerful Erutaki warrior, who is protected from physical attacks.
The hero’s regroup and seek the Chief. Shto convice the chief that there is an impostor pretending to be the shaman and that this threat needs to be taken care over.
