Having discovered the secrets of Ameiko’s heritage, the party prepares for a grand journey to the north to reclaim her birthright: the Jade Throne of the Minkai Emperors. The party seeks to travel the path of Ameiko’s ancestors in reverse, heading up to the Frozen Lands of the Linnorm Kings and from there across the Crown of the World to reach the distant lands of Tian Xia. By taking this path, the party can discover the mysteries of Ameiko’s ancestors, they can return Kelda Oxgutter to her homelands, and most importantly they can recover the fabled artifact Shuisen – a vastly powerful magic sword that has guided the Amatatsu clan for generations but has been lost.
The party spends their time in Sandpoint wisely, making the preparations needed for an undoubtedly gruelling journey. Izati finds acceptable prices for several magical artifacts and Hirohito happily trades away a magical shield in exchange for a sorely needed caravan wagon. Despite the caravan-related activity, Sandru is little seen and his limited presence seems only to cause conflict. His reliability for the upcoming journey is uncertain.
Koya engages in fortunetelling to scry into the party’s future before she and Ignatius leave to seek out a map of the Land of the Linnorm Kings. A worried book-seller happily agrees to give them such a map in exchange for dealing with Yothan, a drunken town bully who has been demanding protection money. Investigating the Rusty Dragon Inn results in a meeting with Yothan who is promptly threatened and intimidated into stopping his behaviour. Devising a plan to ensure Yothan leaves town, and perhaps seeing an opportunity to turn a wayward life around, Koya insists that Yothan accompanies the caravan as an abusive drunken racist caravan guard.
Ignatius prepares a pre-journey celebratory feast that nobody dares to attempt except for Koya, who has the willpower to resist choking or gagging. The party takes a final opportunity to arrange the selling of exotic goods and purchase of the trade goods and food stores required for their journey – a task usually handled by Sandru. The party’s journey will take them north, and hopefully they are prepared for the unfamiliar lands that will await them once they pass Brinewall.
