The hidden sniper continued to loose magical arrows from the darkness of the forest while the party fights off the last of entropic leopards. When these magical beasts are defeated, the sniper begins to make her escape, no doubt intending to wait for yet another opportunity for a deadly ambush. But with Hirohito nearly slain in this encounter, and with a time-critical quest to complete, the party intends to give the sniper no further opportunities. Just as a potion of invisibility is downed by the mysterious assailant, Traftar lets loose a magical faerie fire upon her – she is now invisible yet her location lit up clear as day. The sniper flees into the dense forest to distance herself from the party who take pursuit after the retreating light. Koya and Izati use their mastery of the Domain of Travel to dash effortlessly through the undergrowth, and the sniper is overtaken and surrounded. Koya entreats the assailant to surrender, but like a cornered animal she lashes out at her pursuers, loosing deadly arrows with skillful dexterity even from point-blank range. Izati forgoes diplomacy for his spear, and soon the surrounded and outmatched sniper is cut down, her menaces brought to an end.
Ignatious searches the undergrowth for small animals and chases a rabbit to no success.
On the party’s return to Kalsgard they are intercepted by the guide Ukshakka and relate their ominous news about her friend Ulf – that he is likely to be launched aboard the burning funeral ship of the deceased ring-giver Snorri Stone-Eye. Sensing a heavy fog that will not abate until nightfall, Ukshakka presents the party with a plan for Ulf’s rescue. They should find her near nightfall at a point just outside Kalsgard, where she will provide them with kayaks and training on their use. The party might then intercept the funeral ship and search it under cover of fog, thus hiding this interference from the nobles of Kalsgard. Until nightfall the funeral ship is berthed at the Kalsgard dockfront, although under heavy guard from dozens of Ulfen warriors and Snorri Stone-Eye’s own elite huscarls.
The party returned to their quarters at the inn to find it thoroughly ransacked, with a telltale feather left from the Blood Feather Raven. They also meet Kelda, who presents them with 1800gp from selling the captured longboat, after taking a 200gp cut for herself. Apparently the sale was easy to arrange once the Rimerunners guild had learned of it, as they immediately sought out Kelda and offered her such a generous amount. The party then leaves the inn to find a commotion – bypassers are gathered around a body laying dead in the streets, wondering if there was a murder and who was responsible. Judging there was enough intrigue to deal with, the party make quick their exit before they are noticed.
